Before establishing his own watch brand in 2009, Ludovic Ballouard had already built an impressive résumé. After working in aeronautics in France, he moved to Geneva, first joining Franck Muller's after-sales department before spending seven years at F.P. Journe, where he became responsible for assembling one of modern watchmaking's masterpieces, the Sonnerie Souveraine.

When the time came for the Brittany native to fulfil his dream of creating a watch under his own name, Ballouard could have taken his first collection in any number of directions. Instead, he chose to channel his considerable watchmaking ability into expressing a simple but powerful idea.

The Time is Now

Ballouard's philosophy is disarmingly straightforward: only the present moment has meaning. The past cannot be changed, so there is little value in dwelling on it, while the future remains unknown and impossible to predict. The present, represented by the current hour, is all that matters.

Rather than leaving that life-affirming outlook as an abstract idea, Ballouard transformed it into a playful mechanical display. His debut creation, Upside Down, presents its 12 hour numerals on individual rotating discs, with only the current hour displayed the right way up.

Every sixty minutes, the outgoing hour flips upside down as the next hour, identified by a small dot, rotates into position in a blink-and-you-miss-it transition.

A Clever Solution

Making that deceptively simple display possible required some serious engineering. Ballouard's manually wound Calibre B01 employs a patented jumping-hour mechanism using 12 Maltese crosses to control the 12 rotating hour discs.

Turn Upside Down over to reveal the movement, where the magic behind the display becomes apparent.

As the center wheel completes one revolution every hour, it drives a snail cam that gradually tensions a spring-loaded lever. At the top of the hour, the stored energy is released, advancing a toothed ring that simultaneously drives two of the 12 Maltese crosses, rotating the new hour upright while returning the previous one upside down.

The technical ingenuity is matched by equally accomplished finishing, with circular and straight graining, snailing, perlage, black polishing, and polished bevels throughout.

Impressive Purity

This particular platinum example expresses Ballouard’s vision with impressive purity. The finely grained gray dial establishes a calm, monochromatic character, allowing the rotating hour discs to become the natural focal point without resorting to bright colors or decorative flourishes.

Black printed Arabic numerals provide crisp contrast against the soft metallic surface, while the recessed small-seconds display at six o'clock introduces texture without disturbing the overall symmetry.

The only real burst of color comes from the heat-blued central minute and small-seconds hands, their rich hue standing out beautifully against the understated backdrop. Combined with the generous negative space and minimal text, the resulting composition comes across as clean and contemporary.

The Complete Picture

The exterior is equally considered. The fully polished 41mm platinum case has a sculptural quality, its flowing curves and broad bezel framing the dial without competing for attention.

Rather than placing the crown at the conventional three o'clock position, Ballouard integrates it at half past two within a sculpted crown guard, giving the case an instantly recognizable silhouette. This atypical crown placement is dictated by the architecture of the Calibre B01 while also improving comfort on the wrist and reinforcing the unconventional character of Upside Down.

Completing the watch is a navy calf leather strap secured by a matching platinum pin buckle.

Original Vision

Over a decade and a half after Upside Down first appeared, its wit and originality remain undiminished.

This 2015 platinum version, with its grained gray dial, monochromatic palette, and blued hands, has to be one of the purest expressions of Ludovic Ballouard's original idea: a watch that invites us not simply to read the time differently, but to think about it differently.
