Catalogue Essay
Treasures from Burma

Unheated rubies from Burma (Myanmar) are the rarest and the most sought-after. Possessing an unparalleled crimson red colour and complimented by strong fluorescence, the most vibrant examples are attributed with the fabled term “pigeon’s blood”.

Both the vivid red colour and fluorescence are caused by a high chromium content combined with a low iron content which results in a distinct “inner glow”, an effect highly coveted amongst collectors.

Lot 644, is a pair of exceptionally clean, matching 3.34 and 3.03 carat unheated “pigeon’s blood” rubies from Burma, which display these characteristics and a homogeneous fiery red colour with vivid internal reflections.
