Catalogue Essay
The Vacheron Constantin chronograph reference 4178 is an incredibly good looking watch and hugely undervalued today. Arguably the one style which every collector recalls when thinking of a Vacheron chronograph. Production started in 1940 and continued until approximately 1964. The reference was made in yellow gold, pink gold, stainless steel and steel and gold. The watch is distinguished by its teardrop lugs, sharp lines and definition to the case. The present watch is an exceedingly rare example of a reference 4178 in fabulous condition. Fitted with a salmon dial but with the addition of the popular pulsation scale, the dial is incredibly well preserved with hard enamel signature intact and nicely raised as the connoisseur would require. With the combination of a stainless steel case, still remaining in extremely sharp excellent overall condition with elegant teardrop lugs and a highly unusual and charismatic dial in wonderful original condition, the present watch is one of the rarest and most desirable chronographs manufactured by Vacheron Constantin.
