Catalogue Essay
"The moon kept staring at me, so I started to stare back at it. If it didn’t change constantly, I wouldn’t paint it so often. For my 2006 show in New York City, I painted 400 paintings outside at night while looking at the sky. They were all the same size – 14x14”. The paintings are a little like poems, each one wants to be a star. New York City with all its bright lights is not an ideal place to do something like this, but who cares. It doesn’t affect it that much. If you ever see one in person, you’ll understand. After I finished these, I copied each one by hand in my studio and hung them in a different place hundreds of miles away. Since there were 400 paintings total, this was a big job. But I got it done. When the paintings hang together they are like one big pulsating painting. I can’t do something that I don’t like to do for very long, that’s why I copy my own work sometimes. When I paint them I tend to think of the people I love who have died and how many times they looked up at the moon." (Ann Craven, 2006)
