What is a Priority Bid?

\n\n

Priority Bids are written, binding bids that must be placed no less than 48 hours in advance of an auction’s start time. The bid must be equal to or greater than the lot’s published low estimate and placed using Phillips’ absentee bid forms.

\n\n

Bidders who have placed Priority Bids ahead of the auction, if they are the winning bidder and satisfy the other conditions of Priority Bidding, will benefit from a Buyer’s Premium rate which is significantly lower than the Buyer’s Premium rate otherwise. This benefit applies whether their winning bid is at the amount of their early Priority Bid or a higher bid placed subsequently by them bidding live in the auction.

\n\n

The new Buyer’s Premium structure featuring Priority Bidding rates is effective from 1 September 2025 and applies to all live auctions in the Fall 2025 season and for all categories, excluding Watches.

\n\n

Watch auctions (both live and timed online auctions) will continue using the same Buyer’s Premium rates that applied in the spring 2025 sale season and will not be eligible for Priority Bidding. Details of these rates can be found here.

\n\n

Timed online-only auctions will be subject to the new standard Buyer’s Premium rates and are not currently eligible for Priority Bidding. You can find details of these rates here.

\n\n

How do I place a Priority Bid?

\n\n

To be eligible for a lower Buyer’s Premium through the scheme, you must leave a written bid at least 48 hours before the auction. The bid must be a written absentee bid.

\n\n

Submitting Priority Bids is simple:

\n\n

• Complete Phillips’ Absentee Bid Form with details of the Absentee Bid(s) you want to submit. You can download and complete the Bid Form here.

\n\n

• Ensure your written absentee Bids are at or above the published low estimate of the Lots you are bidding on.

\n\n

• Sign and send the form to Phillips’ Bids Department in the auction location before the 48-hour pre-auction cut-off. Forms can be emailed using the contact details found below.

\n\n

Please note that Priority Bids cannot be cancelled.

But given the recent news cycle about our dearest Banksy, we find that lore is in the air too. This has us primed to hunt down all the fandom-style Easter eggs we could find in the sale, facts so obsessive the robots might not even know them yet.

In a Paris decimated by the war, a young and poor Bernard Buffet expressed the misery and torment surrounding him through his paintings. But these works were so impactful that he quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the first financial success stories of Post-War artists. So much so, in fact, that by the 1950s, he purchased a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, and would paint landscape scenes en plein air from its backseat in the countryside — though we’d imagine the air was a bit more grand luxe than plain. The image of the artist in his Rolls was featured in a 1956 issue of Paris Match, which documented his lavish lifestyle. He could never shake the associations afterward.

\n\n

This early 1949 self-portrait comes from a time when the artist hadn’t yet struck it big, and showcases his miserabilist, expressionist style, executed with bold, graphic lines and a muted palette. It is a highly emblematic work that captures a crucial moment in the significant artist’s life.

French Expressionist artist Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) is widely considered to be the first mega-artist of the Post-War era, capturing the existential zeitgeist of the 1950s in Europe. Though he was commercially successful, his critical reception was lukewarm in an era dominated by Abstract Expressionism. His legacy began to shift a decade ago amid increased market and institutional interest, highlighted by a prominent retrospective in 2016 at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. His work is held at Tate Modern, MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, and in the dedicated Bernard Buffet Museum in Japan, among others.

Robert Mapplethorpe’s deal with the devil

Many who knew Robert Mapplethorpe have recounted him explaining he made a deal with the devil at a young age, and he seems to have incorporated such stories into both his personal and private persona. This sense of a constructed identity is on full display in this captivating 1980 self-portrait. He owned many personal talismans adorned with satanic or occult imagery, fascinated as he was by mysticism. But at the end of the day, these are just a few lines of lore in a practice that is largely celebrated for its formal precision — a groundbreaking marriage of classical aesthetics with often challenging subject matter.

This season, ULTIMATE — Phillips’ platform devoted to exclusive works of art, with a particular emphasis on photography — will present a landmark selection of female artists, the platform’s most significant yet. From Korean artists like Jung Lee and JeeYoung Lee to American artist Amanda Means and French artist Noémie Goudal, the platform presents a global mini-survey of female creative vision today. Mika Ninagawa and Anna Deller-Yee foreground the expressive potential of handwork – reclaiming techniques historically associated with feminine craft and transforming them into powerful, embodied forms where vulnerability and strength coexist, and the trace of the hand becomes both visible and vital. Both artists present new works created exclusively for ULTIMATE.
