Coin watches offer a captivating glimpse into the history of horology. These ultra-slim timepieces were crafted from legal tender, requiring two coins to be split to form their outer case, while a remarkably small watch remained completely concealed within a separate, hinged case. Audemars Piguet is one of many Swiss brands that produced these exquisite creations, with production continuing into the early 1990s. Typically, historic United States $20 coins were used for watches intended for the American market.

Audemars Piguet developed a fine selection of rare coin watches, with the present model featuring a skeletonized movement being their most prestigious. The 1897 Liberty Head coin showcases a bas-relief depiction of “Lady Liberty” on the front cover, while the reverse displays the Great Seal of the United States along with the inscription “United States of America Twenty Dollars”. To open the watch, one must locate the nearly hidden push button on the milled edge of the coin. The concealed case houses a spectacular, skeletonized, and hand-engraved movement with 14K gold bridges. This inner case is hinged and lifts from within the coin to reveal the time.

Audemars Piguet

Swiss | 1881
A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.
Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
