Catalogue Essay
The Royal Oak ref. 15202 has, in recent years, become one of the most coveted references in contemporary watchmaking. First unveiled in 2000 in stainless steel and yellow gold, it preserved the iconic 39mm “Jumbo” case and the celebrated cal. 2121, while introducing modern updates such as the sapphire crystal caseback and the bold “Grande Tapisserie” dial. For the first time, the model offered a silver dial, alongside dark blue and cosmos blue variants. In 2006, the line expanded further with the introduction of an all‑pink gold version.
In 2012, marking the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak, the ref. 15202 was subtly reimagined in homage to the seminal ref. 5402. Hallmarks of the anniversary edition included the “Petite Tapisserie” dial and the retour of the applied “AP” logo at 6 o’clock, restoring the most faithful aesthetic link to the original of 1972.
Among the entire production run, one iteration eclipses all others in rarity and desirability: the ref. 15202BC, cased in discreet 18K white gold and distinguished by its striking salmon‑toned dial (Audemars Piguet’s official designation: pink champagne). At first glance, the case resembles stainless steel, yet its unmistakable weight reveals the precious metal composition. The dial itself shimmers between pale rose, pink champagne, and hints of gold, shifting beautifully with the light.
Upon its debut in 2019, Audemars Piguet declared production would be limited to no more than 75 examples per year. As the reference was discontinued in 2021, it is believed that as few as 225 watches were ever made. The present example, offered in excellent overall condition and accompanied by its full set of accessories, represents a highly coveted example of the modern “Jumbo.”
