The sheet is hinged on the reverse in places to a mat. There is some discoloration to the adhesive, visible at the center left vertical edge of the top sheet. There are pale brown spots near the upper right corner and some slight lifting to the lower left corner of the top sheet. There is some discoloration on places, most noticeably along the edges of the lower sheet. There are two small accretions near the upper left vertical edge, a soft crease along the lower horizontal edge and minor bumping to the lower right corner to the lower sheet, all visible upon very close inspection. Blurring the Lines: Art & Design

Exceptional ceramics from the 1940s by Axel Salto atop a sideboard by Pierre Chapo from the mid-1980s, which stands next to a monumental artwork by Rick Lowe from 2022. Such juxtapositions are inspiring for the ways that they reach across time, space, and artistic discipline. I would describe my design sensibility as minimalist, and I’m often drawn to geometric forms, simple lines, and bold colors. There are several works in the sale that meet this criteria but the one piece that stands out the most to me is the Jean and Henri Prouvé long bench. I’m absolutely obsessed with it. The bench measures over 17 feet long and is absolutely stunning in person! The red color of the steel legs is striking and nicely balanced by the cold ceramic tiles that line the top. I can't help but imagine placing it in a future home of mine with Dan Levinson's paintings hanging above it. I wasn’t previously familiar with Levinson’s work but I’m attracted by the almost Constructivist nature of the designs and also the tactile quality of the paintings, which looks like they could be decades-old but were actually executed in 2022.

My collecting interests are fairly eclectic — I own a few unique and editioned works by emerging artists, such as Armig Santos and Jordan Nasser, but recently also started exploring ceramics (and admit to being an avid rock collector!). There are many pieces I’d love to own from Freestyle, but perhaps first and foremost it would have to be Felipe Baeza’s Déjate Caer. Born in Mexico and based in NY, Baeza is an incredible artist, and this work specifically caught my eye during the artist’s Public Fund exhibition this past fall. I’d pair it with the Brook Hsu, a tiny oil on panel the Taiwanese-American artist exhibited in a 9th century church in Rome. Another painting I’d vie for is Seth Becker’s Coconut Crab. I was taken by his show at Castle Gallery in LA last year and should have gotten on the bandwagon sooner (his Venus over Manhattan show fully sold out)!

\n\n

I’m not one to overhang my walls, so with this trio of paintings in hand I’d shift focus. I’m drawn to Heidi Lau’s ceramic sculpture not just aesthetically, but also for the way in which Lau, drawing on her upbringing in Macau, conceptually explores diasporic identity and colonial histories. I also love the sculptural quality of Minjae Kim’s pieces. Born in Seoul, Kim is a multi-disciplinary NY-based designer whose work redefines the boundaries between art and design. His chair, alongside that of Terence Main’s 1988 “Golden Boy”, might just be the start of my new chair collection!

I’m a photography specialist, so my expertise is confined to artists who convey their ideas within a two-dimensional plane. But I can’t deny the allure of the three-dimensional object, and Andre Bloc’s Boomerang desk explores space in a way that I find thrilling. The graceful curve of its polished wood surface is elegantly balanced on three bent-wood legs; it combines an entirely modern shape with the eternally appealing material of wood. I would gladly empty my home office to make this fit!

\n\n

I’m always interested in how artists work with their chosen materials. Indeed, a huge part of the creative process is coming to terms with the physicality of one’s medium. I love Hugo Franca’s unique "Tafui" bench because he’s embraced the essence of a massive hunk of pequi wood, making you believe that this tree always wanted to be a bench and was just waiting for Franca to come along and make it happen.

\n\n

Borderie’s Large bowl appeals to me for a number of reasons, one quite personal. My grandmother worked as a ceramist in the 1950s, and I spent a lot of time in her studio learning about clays, slip, glazes, and to keep my hands away from the kilns (!). Borderie’s platter is a perfect distillation of the 1950s aesthetic I would see occasionally in a diluted form in my grandmother’s studio (which was otherwise populated by garden gnomes and other cutesy figures). Using only red and black against a gray background, Borderie has created a design and shape that is deeply satisfying in every respect.

My approach to decorating has always been to find a synergy or balance between materials, shapes, colors, and textures. The pieces featured here all seem to be in conversation with one another.

Rhythmic and evocative, these works conjure a wind that whistles across the top of Broderie’s bottle, past the bars of Gober’s chest, and undulates through the winding openings of Chapo’s sideboard, before being blocked by Prouvé’s paravent. I love that each piece feels solid, heavily weighted and rooted, but somehow suspended and airy, leaving cracks and spaces through which we slip and slither.

As the broader culture reconsiders creators who have been unjustly left out of historical conversations, Frank Walter (1926-2009) has emerged as a fascinating figure deserving recognition as one of the greatest Caribbean painters. Born in Antigua and tracing his lineage to both enslaved people and European aristocracy, Walter has been compared by Nina Khrushcheva to a da Vincian humanist ideal of man as a visual artist, musician, writer, philosopher, and agrarian scientist. He achieved notable success as an agricultural systems manager, traveled widely throughout Europe and the Caribbean, and briefly engaged in politics, before settling into a rural home in Antigua to focus on his painting practice in relative isolation until his death in 2009. The 2017 Venice Biennale exhibition Frank Walter: The Last Universal Man at the Antigua and Barbuda National Pavilion catapulted the artist onto the global artworld stage and received notable praise, with rave reviews from Thelma Golden and Hans-Ulrich Obrist, among others.

Vermont-based still life painter Susan Walp (b. 1949) makes her auction debut in this sale with her 2022 work Cut Open Grapefruit in Green Dish with Bricks, Shell, Knife, and Photocopy. The work is emblematic of Walp’s studied approach to still life, capturing commonplace interior scenes with an attentive and skilled hand. The inviting composition showcases a subtle play of light and shadow in muted earth tones that ground the canvas against the brightness of fresh fruit. Walp’s works are in the National Academy Museum of New York and the Hood Museum at Darmouth College, and her numerous awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship and recognition from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Mose Tolliver

The works of Mose Tolliver are characterized by a flat graphic quality and muted color palette, seen clearly in this painting, which represents Tolliver’s debut at Phillips. Born to sharecropper parents near Montgomery, Alabama, and one of eleven siblings, Tolliver left school for work at an early age to support his family. Initially inspired by artists he saw painting advertising imagery, Tolliver turned to painting to combat isolation and pain after a work-related injury. Now, his remarkable and prolific painting practice is receiving posthumous and long overdue recognition from collectors and institutions worldwide. His works are part of several permanent institutional collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Centre Pompidou.

Dominique Zimbacca

Dominique Zimbacca is representative of a selection of designers offered in FREESTYLE: Living with Art & Design who were working at the same time and place as makers such as Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, and Le Corbusier, and who are now poised for greater recognition. As makers of this time period confronted the necessities of the postwar cultural landscape, Zimbacca imbued this elm side chair with bold geometry, clean lines, a strong form and creative invention. The chair also boasts exceptional provenance, having been originally acquired directly from the artist.

Juliette Derel

After studying painting, drawing, art history, and ceramics at the School of Fine Arts in Tours in 1949, Juliette Derel settled in Vallauris, a region with a long history of ceramic production, which Pablo Picasso helped reignite in the 1950s. Her large wall light is emblematic of the artist’s skill in producing functional objects including lighting designs and mirrors. She went on to exhibit in France throughout her career, notably at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris, as well as abroad, including in Montreal, Caracas, and Prague.

Gilbert Valentin and Les Archanges

Born in Nancy, France in 1928, Gilbert Valentin became a master of ceramics, apprenticing at the National School of Vierzon and then working as a ceramic engineer at Lunéville-Saint-Clément. The artist settled in Vallauris in 1950, just a year after Juliette Derel. There, he founded Les Archanges, where he hosted many creatives, including Pablo Picasso, Jacques Prévert, George Braque, and Jean Cocteau. His robust works are known for revitalizing certain earlier ceramic forms within a Modern context. The bold form and color of the pitcher offered here is a striking example.

Brook Hsu

\n\n

Brook Hsu’s compelling imagery draws on autobiographical and mythological sources from her own observations, and study of art history, film, and literature. In Pale Green from 2022 — executed at a miniature scale of 2 x 1 inches (5.08 x 2.54 cm) — an otherworldly figure plays the flute. At once reminiscent of the Pied Piper of Hamelin and the fictional character Jack Skellington, the figure’s ghostly coloration blurs the boundary between foreground and background. Now based in New York, the Taiwanese-American artist grew up in Oklahoma, receiving her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2010 and her MFA from Yale in 2016.

A librarian by day, Seth Becker’s captivating and intimate paintings often visually represent narratives drawn from his extensive reading of fiction and poetry. Quickly gaining the attention of collectors, his work has been presented widely in solo exhibitions, including at Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson, New York, and Castle Gallery in Los Angeles. Raised in Queens, Becker earned his MFA from the New York Studio School and now lives and works in Wappingers Falls, New York.

Heidi Lau

\n\n

Heidi Lau’s creative practice isn’t too concerned with making something new from nothing. Rather, it considers the permanence inherent in objects and matter through a non-linear viewpoint of the materiality of history. “My ceramic works are hand built into the form of various objects of remembrance — towers, funeral monuments and fossilized creatures that are simultaneously being infested, disintegrating, and reforming on a cellular level,” the artist has explained. Currently living and working in Brooklyn, Lau grew up in Macao and earned her BFA from New York University in 2008. Her works have been exhibited at the Macao Museum of Art, Boston Center for the Arts, Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, among many others.

In 1950, Charlotte Perriand was commissioned to design the interiors and furnishings for the Unité d'habitation Air France in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. The four-story building, designed by the architects Jean Hébrard, R. Lefebvre, Jean Létu, and François Bienvenu, comprised sixty apartments of varied types to house Air France employees in Brazzaville, a then central connection point for flights within Africa. Perriand enlisted Les Ateliers Jean Prouvé assist with the production of the storage systems for the building devising cupboards that were built into recesses in the concrete walls of the apartment kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms. Prouvé’s expertise in folded metal and closet systems was crucial to the design. Perriand, however, aesthetically improved Prouvé’s existing designs going as far as to change dimensions, materials, colors, and forms with an eye towards complementing the primary colors and grid-like structure of the exterior façade of the building.

This collaboration between the two designers would prove quite fruitful, with Perriand writing to Prouvé, “To start, I am very happy about the ‘Brazza’ prototype. I believe that this time we’ve gotten it right and that these façades fulfill the desires of a large number of architects: elimination of awkward constraints, combination of traditional architecture and factory built facades easy to include in a plan, rapid mounting, a luxury finish for a modest price, installation with ventilation for tropical countries, unventilated installation for Europe.” The design for the Brazza cabinet marked Perriand’s first large-scale collaboration with the Ateliers Jean Prouvé and Perriand was so pleased with the design that she installed the present prototype of the Brazza cabinet into her apartment on la rue Las-Cases during renovations to the apartment in 1951.

\n\n

\n\n

Interestingly, in Paris, the Brazza cabinet proved suitable to satisfy different needs than in Brazzaville. The French version, which went into wider production, differed slightly from the Brazzaville version: the left side was designed for toiletries, the right side for clothes, and the upper portion for long-term storage. Perriand included plexiglas trays that were standardized to fit different items such as shirts, underwear, paper, files, or envelopes, which could be pulled in and out of the closet on sliding tracks. By 1958, these trays were mass produced, becoming one of Perriand’s most successful and widely distributed designs. In 1952, she incorporated the present prototype cabinet into a bathroom design presented at the Formes utiles exhibition at the Salon des arts ménagers in Paris. This installation promoted Perriand’s philosophy for improving the design for bathing and grooming inspired by her time in Japan. On the occasion of the exhibition she said, “It isn’t nice to bathe in polluted water (which is the case of the bathtub), or to deprive yourself of relaxing in the bath after a shower, or taking a cold shower after getting out of the bathtub while keeping your feet in hot water. You have to think about and treat bathroom fixtures not in an off-putting way, but by making their use pleasant.” The Brazza cabinet served as efficient and elegant storage for linens and toiletries, intended to replicate Perriand’s own ways of living with her designs.
