Good To Know:
- Jadeite with garden scene
- Signed Cartier Paris
- E.W.C. Co movement
From the sinuous sensuality of Belle Époque to the sleek geometry of Art Deco, Cartier clocks have long captured imaginations while encapsulating each era's essence. The 1920s and 30s marked a particularly creative apex for Cartier timepieces, as bold lines, novel materials and oriental influences transformed clocks into modernist treasures.
This desk clock with a agate surround and strut from circa 1920s exemplifies the masterful creations of Coüet. Of supreme elegance, the clock is crowned with a magnificent jadeite pendant. Expertly carved with a poetic garden scene featuring delicate floral motifs and a graceful butterfly, the jadeite reflects Cartier’s passion for sourcing the finest gem materials from the Far East during the roaring twenties.
Framing the serene scene is an elegant eight-petaled floral motif in gold, beautifully contrasted against rich black enamel. The skeletonized hour ring rests above the translucent pink-hued agate, allowing its delicate nature to shimmer through. The corners are further accentuated with two emeralds, adding a subtle yet striking touch of color.
Beautifully preserved and kept in a private collection for years, the clock retains its crisp “Cartier Paris” engraving on the strut, with matching case numbers stamped on both the strut and the inner caseback. It is powered by a reliable eight-day movement by the European Watch Co., signed “FAB Suisse.”
