Catalogue Essay
- The Cartier Tonneau was first launched in 1906 as the Maison’s now-iconic barrel-shaped wristwatch that set the tone for the Art Deco era. Beautiful in style and proportions, the modern Tonneau remains one of the most recognised models, adhering strongly to the design language of the original.
- A quintessential Cartier signature, the present quartz Tonneau Double Fuseau wears comfortably on the wrist thanks to its slim and curvaceous case that perfectly hugs the contours of its wearer. The elongated profile of this piece is balanced by the symmetrical pairing of the two timezones displayed on top of one another. The top half of the dial features the iconic Cartier Tank configuration with large black Roman numerals, while the second time zone on the lower half is differentiated by its painted Roman numerals on the quarters. Each time zone is operated via its own designated sapphire cabochon-topped crown, allowing the wearer to adjust them separately without restraint.
- Fusing form and function, the present yellow gold Tonneau Double Fuseau is preserved in excellent overall condition and will be a fantastic addition to any Cartier collections.

Cartier
FrenchWith the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
