Catalogue Essay
This extraordinary Cartier Cloche, reference 4339, is a rare and highly collectible timepiece that exemplifies Cartier’s mastery of design, innovation, and horological artistry. Part of a limited edition of just 50 pieces, this watch is a modern reimagining of one of Cartier’s most iconic and unconventional designs, originally introduced in the 1920s.

The 18k pink gold case is crafted in the distinctive bell-shaped (“cloche” in French) form, a design that allows the watch to be worn in multiple orientations—either traditionally on the wrist or upright as a desk clock. This unique feature highlights Cartier’s creativity and commitment to blending functionality with artistry. The skeletonised dial is a marvel of craftsmanship, revealing the intricate inner workings of the movement. The Roman numerals are integrated into the skeletonised structure, while blued steel hands glide gracefully over the openworked design, creating a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity.

This example, numbered 32 of 50, is offered in excellent condition and as a full set, including its original box, warranty papers, and documentation. As part of a highly limited production, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire a truly unique and historically significant Cartier model.

Cartier

French
With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
