Catalogue Essay
In his series Hyper, Parisian photographer Denis Darzacq invited street dancers from Paris and Rouen to recreate their gravity defying moves within the narrow aisles of big box “hypermarkets.” The juxtaposition of the figure in motion and the location creates a visual tension reflecting the angst among youth in neighborhoods that were rapidly becoming gentrified. As straight, unedited photographs (made possible only by improvements in camera shutter speed at the time), the works from the series also suspend our belief in what is real, just as the dancers’ bodies are suspended in time and space.
