Catalogue Essay
Edmond Lachenal was one of the leading figures in the French art pottery movement at the end of the 19th century. Along with his contemporaries Delaherche and Chaplet, he created works within the art nouveau style that favored expressive and complex glazes with sculptural and naturalistic forms. The present pitcher is a particularly clever example of this, as Lachenal did not use a vine as a purely decorative element but rather the vine becomes the handle.
