Catalogue Essay
With an important heritage in creating some of the most iconic pilot’s wristwatches, IWC introduced their very first example in 1936 named the ‘Special Pilot’s Watch’. Featuring an oversized stainless steel case, it featured most notably a triangular index at 12 o’clock with large Arabic numerals and an oversized half-onion crown, an anti-magnetic escapement and luminescent material on the dial. With enlarged features, the watch was designed to be worn over the sleeve of a flying suit.
Still known today for their pilot’s chronograph timepieces, the firm has released various iterations over the years due to its iconic success and its importance to the firm’s heritage. In 2018, the firm released the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph ref. IW377724 featuring a 43mm diameter stainless steel case. With a day and date complication, its dial design retains its signature features such as the oversized Arabic numerals, its triangular index at 12 o’clock and most importantly, the iconic baton-shaped Mark XI hands with a squared-off tip on the hour hand. To give the timepiece a vintage appeal, the luminous material on the hands and indexes has been coloured to a warm buttery hue to imitate vintage examples that develop a patina over time. Wonderfully executed, the modern iteration retains its true essence of a pilot’s chronograph wristwatch from the firm.
Offered with its full set of accessories and preserved in excellent overall condition. This present example is a timeless classic that can be worn casually and with a suit.
