Sometimes I buy watches because the movements are just so compelling. This is one of them. Ben Clymer was visiting The Armoury in New York wearing the steel version of this piece and I was so impressed with its history. It is a recreation of the original IWC Portuguese down to the movement. Given its size, it would be a great watch to teach a watchmaking class with as the gear train and other parts are so clearly and beautifully laid out. - Mark Cho

- 1993 marked the year IWC turned 125 years old. To commemorate this momentous milestone, the manufacturer launched the Portuguese Jubilee 125th Anniversary Limited Edition, inspired by its iconic predecessor, the ref. 325, from the 1940s. This model was delivered with 1000 examples in stainless steel, another 500 in pink gold and only 250 pieces were realised in platinum.
- Fitted in an oversized platinum case, the present example is among the rarest iteration of this limited edition. The clean and legible silvered dial is fitted with a small seconds subsidiary dial at 6 o’clock, along with large Arabic numerals that echo the aesthetics of the post-war examples.
- Drawing from the flat cal. 74 from of the ref. 325, the sapphire caseback invites the wearer to admire the cal. 9829, an elegantly finished movement, as sleek as the watch itself.
- Numbered 10 of a limited edition of 250 pieces only, the present Jubilee limited edition ref. 5441 is the perfect example that bears the desired traits an IWC Portuguese.
