GOOD TO KNOW
• Very Rare World Time Chronograph Model
• Produced by Gallet and retailed by Jacquet Droz
- The present “Flying Officer” chronograph is a very rare 20th century example with only one other examples known to have been offered at auction (Phillips Geneva Watch Auction: Nine, Lot 75). Produced by Gallet & Co and retailed by Jacquet Droz, it was an important aviator’s tool watch that enabled the wearer to measure time intervals and with the rotating bezel and world time scale to track multiple time zones.
- The firm, Gallet & Co, established headquarters in both Switzerland and the US with strong distribution in the US by the late 1800s. The brand became well-known in the early 20th century for their aviation chronographs with the “Flying Officer” - one of their most recognized models and initially commissioned by U. S. Senator Harry S. Truman in 1939 for Army Air Corps pilots.
- Jacquet Droz was a famed Swiss 18th century watchmaker known for both his fine timepieces, mechanical automata, and refined enamelled pocket watches sold to European royalty and the Chinese court. While the brand declined in the 19th century, it was revived in 2000 under the Swatch Group and today is known for limited edition decorative timepieces.
