Catalogue Essay
Kenzo Tange was one of the most significant architects working in the 20th century and won numerous awards for his work. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, he designed countless iconic buildings, including the arenas for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, which were the first Olympic games to be held in Asia. Similar to Junzo Sakakura, his designs are deeply indebted to European Modernism but also incorporate elements of design from his native Japan. In 1957, he designed the Sumi Memorial Hall, an office building in Aichi, Japan, as well as pieces of furniture for the building. The present set of chairs come directly from this commission.
