Catalogue Essay
• Bernhard Lederer, German-born and Swiss-based, has long stood as one of the quiet pillars of contemporary independent watchmaking. A member of the AHCI since 1985, Lederer spent decades behind the scenes creating complicated movements for leading maisons before deciding, in 2020, to step into the spotlight under his own name. The result was a project nurtured for decades: the Central Impulse Chronometer, a watch that crystallises his lifelong fascination with chronometry and escapements.
• At its heart lies a bold reinterpretation of George Daniels’s independent double-wheel, dual-impulse escapement, itself a modernised take on Breguet’s natural escapement. In Lederer’s execution, two independent gear trains are each powered by their own barrel and escape wheel, driving the system in perfect harmony. To this architecture he added a pair of 10-second constant-force remontoires, which alternately deliver energy every five seconds, ensuring an exceptionally even flow of power to the escapement.
• The Central Impulse Chronometer quickly achieved critical acclaim, winning the Innovation Prize at the 2021 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, cementing its place among the most important horological breakthroughs of the modern era. Originally launched in just 25 examples each in pink gold and white gold, the model epitomises exclusivity while offering collectors a rare opportunity to own a landmark in independent watchmaking.
• Presented in like-new condition and accompanied by all of its accessories, the present watch is numbered 9 out of 25.
