British | B. 1930 D. 2017Lord Snowdon was a British photographer, designer and filmmaker who, from the early 1950s, established a reputation for his portraits and documentary style photography. He photographed royal subjects as well as public and society figures, actors, dancers, writer, and musicians such as Laurence Olivier, Sir Alec Guinness, Rudolf Nureyev, Meryl Streep and David Bowie, among others. Throughout the 1950s he became a regular contributor to various magazines such as Tatler, Sketch, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Paris Match and the Daily Express. His signature style used theatrical settings in which the sitter was carefully controlled. In 1960, he married Princess Margaret, daughter of King George VI and sister of Queen Elizabeth II. In the late 1960s, he began making documentary films for television, including Don't Count the Candles (1968) and Born to Be Small (1971). Today, a large body of his oeuvre can be found within the National Portrait Gallery collection in London.
