Ludvig Find

Danish | B. 1869 D. 1945

Apprenticed in 1885 and a pupil in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts the following year, Ludvig Find (1869-1945) became a proficient craftsman across media, from oil painting to illustration, and even ceramics. Pulling influences from various European artistic circles, he was particularly shaped by French and Belgian modernism, including the oeuvre of Gauguin and the wider French Nabis, yet fifteenth century Italian Renaissance art, such as that of Piero della Francesca, also decisively effected Find’s own career. His naturalistic genre painting was quickly abandoned to favour the Symbolism of Europe, as Find came to imitate this spiritually inflected and decorative artistic language. Alongside this, he was closely connected to the journal Taarnet, another Symbolist circle of interdisciplinary practitioners. From Impressionistic colour-driven works to intimate scenes of family life, gardens, children and interiors, Find commanded a wealth of media and subject matter to signal an eclectic artistic output.
