MAMIMOZI, born in 1990, was only 9 years old when she developed a strong interest in calligraphy and has been dedicated to becoming a calligrapher since high school. She later graduated from Daitoku Bunka University with a major in calligraphy in 2013. Since then, she has been active in the market, collaborating with over 20 well-known brands like Fendi, Nike, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, and Montblanc, showcasing her work around the globe. The artist has also cultivated a deep connection with Hong Kong after holding her first solo exhibition in the city, “Savouring Art,” in Lan Kwai Fong in 2019.
As a hip-pop lover and a calligrapher, MAMIMOZI is known for her unique style, “calligraf2ity”, a portmanteau of “calligraphy” and “graffiti”. Just as the name suggests, her work fuses street art culture with traditional calligraphy. Many perceive her as an unconventional calligrapher, considering her dynamic performance set to rhythmic music, and the innovative mediums she uses. Inspired by a video of a Chinese artist writing on a flagged path, she has always wanted to combine graffiti and calligraphy. She ultimately developed the original idea of creating graffiti with water, which is now her signature style. In addition to water, she has also experimented with other innovative mediums like snow, drones, and laser in her performances.
Phillips is thrilled to offer a calligraphy work from MAMIMOZI’s live performance. This unique calligraphy piece, “刻”, meaning “time” in Japanese, is her creation for our Japan thematic auction TOKI.
Please note: The Lot will be created by the artist live at our Phillips West Kowloon Headquarters on 21 November 2024, in the style of the image shown. The image is for illustration purposes only. The final features of the Lot may differ given the unique artistic process used to create it.
