Catalogue Essay
Released in 2008 the Horological Machine No. 2 by MB & F continues the brands passion for producing thoroughly 21st century timepieces that are not only revolutionary in their technical capability but also in their unconventional designs. Each of the six limited addition series have a unique look and were made in a variety of material combinations from sapphire and 18k pink gold, to 18k white gold and titanium and like the present watch ceramic and titanium. This independent brand seeks to reinterpret traditional watchmaking in to three-dimensional kinetic sculptures. The founder Maximilian Büsser was inspired by mid-20th century science fiction and all his teams’ creations are rooted in this genre with a cyberpunk flair.

The present example with flying buttresses and bolted portholes reminds one of 20th century science fiction novels. The modular design separates the parts and each element is amplified, but are components of traditional horology. The dial with two round portals separates the time from the date and bi-hemisphere moon display. The large rectangular case with locking push crown houses a “machine” that is a wonderful example of micro-engineering, featuring an instantaneous jump hour with retrograde minute and date sectors. Today’s haute horlogerie encompasses highly skilled watch making, juxtaposed with new and innovative designs. The long line of Horological Machine’s (1-9) by MB & F, each seek to give the wearer a new perspective in timekeeping. This Horological Machine 2 is in excellent condition and as the founder wishes, not only tells the time, it is a kinetic sculpture that is a joy to wear.
