Literature
Michael Ancher
Danish | B. 1849 D. 1927Associated with the Skagen Painters and the Danish Modern Breakthrough, Michael Ancher (1849-1927) developed a distinct form of modern figure painting that combined plein-air observation with rigorous, classically structured composition. Ancher arrived in Skagen in 1874 in search of a new artistic direction, where he met the local, artistically gifted Anna Brøndum, beginning a lifelong personal and professional partnership. After the two were engaged in 1887 and married in August 1880, the pair ultimately secured broad public recognition and a lasting position in the canon of nineteenth-century Danish art.
