Catalogue Essay
- MING is named after one of their key founding members, Ming Thein, a physicist by trade and a world-renowned photographer by virtue, not to mention a watch collecting veteran. The avant-garde microbrand joined forces with Massena LAB in 2021 to launch a limited collection to conclude their 17 series, inspired by the ingenious geometry of the honeybees, as well as the vintage Rolex “honeycomb” dials. This partnership with William Massena, the brainchild behind the creative playground for brilliant designs, marked a collaboration between two friends and colleagues who share the same ethos and passion towards modern horology.
- Originally, the 17 series was introduced in 2017 as the cornerstone of the brand, boldly setting the tone for future models with their short, flared lugs and stylised numerals printed on the crystal. In the present model, the numerals are laser-etched on the reverse side of the sapphire crystal and filled with Super-LumiNova giving the dial incredible visual depth. Massena designed a superb textured dial for this final edition, a true representation featuring a three-dimensional hexagonal pattern.
- The 17.09 was released in two versions in a total of 200 pieces made: 150 pieces fitted with a black dial and 50 pieces fitted with a honeycomb dial.
- The 17.09 is powered by the Schwarz-Etienne 300.M1 which is a modified version of the Sellita SW330-2 and features an hour hand that can be independently set, a useful function for frequent flyers. Framed in a stainless steel case, this golden honey-dialled beauty is one of 50 pieces produced and is a rare modern heirloom, accompanied by its original accessories.
