Catalogue Essay
- A name that cannot be missed when it comes to Japanese independent watchmaking, Naoya Hida has made a strong impression in collector’s radar since 2018. With a rich history in the industry working with Breguet, Vacheron Constantin, F. P. Journe and Ralph Lauren, Hida’s creation under his own name celebrates mid-century beauty.
- Embracing simplicity with attention to details, Hida’s timepieces takes principle from Calatravas such as the Patek Philippe 570 and 96. Based on a blueprint that is already stripped down to the minimal, it is truly difficult to create a brand with a twist that is distinctive. With an extremely low annual production of less than 20 pieces for each model based on an application system, Naoya Hida has done it with his team of watchmakers to impress collectors, and to land your hands on one is not that easy.
- The present example Type 4 was announced in 2023 with two iteration in 904L stainless steel. Both sized at a slightly smaller diameter of 36mm instead of 37mm like his previous creation, the type 4A features German silver dial with black cashew lacquer, while the type 4A-1 features DLC-coated dark grey German silver dial with ivory-coloured cashew lacquer.
- Meticulously thought out, the type 4A features bold sans-serif numerals unique to the type 4 and gives it an overall sportier edge within the entire collection. Known for their incredible hands design, not stamped, but each crafted by ultra-high-precision micro milling, the hour and minute diamond shaped hands are extremely fine and three-dimensional. Furthermore the tip of the blued seconds hand is bent by hand to match the slanted applied chapter ring.
- Equipped with a highly modified Valjoux cal. 7750 which is transformed into the manual-winding cal. 3020CS. Significant modifications have been made to the base caliber, including the removal of the self-winding rotor, chronograph components, and sub-seconds. Additionally, a new winding click spring has been introduced to recreate the tactile winding experience reminiscent of vintage timepieces.
- An unworn example, this is a wonderful opportunity for those who appreciates simplicity and dedication of handcraft from Japan.
