Catalogue Essay
The present lots belong to Nendo’s series of fifty “Manga” chairs which were first presented as part of the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2016. As the names suggest, these designs take the Japanese drawing tradition as their inspiration source. In manga comics, each page contains multiple images arranged in a grid layout. Though flat, these images contain an explosive emotional impact and intellectual complexity. Nendo has done the same with these chairs. The chairs represent different iconographical or conceptual elements of manga, and similar to comics, there is an emphasis on line over mass and volume. There is an anthropomorphic quality to these static objects: they run away, they boom with laughter, they talk to each other and pick each other up. Despite their simple lines and sleek, reflective surfaces, these chairs have bold personalities that tell stories between each other as well as our relationship to them.
