Catalogue Essay
When Oliver Sutherland first started exploring 3D modeling software, he was drawn to the libraries of default textures that are commonly used to communicate personhood in architectural renderings in the absence of human form. For instance, a leather jacket that hangs over the back of a chair or a coffee cup sitting on the kitchen table. These signifiers help construct narratives for otherwise empty, simulated environments. In Waving, Sutherland focuses exclusively on the coffee texture, expanding it into a full-screen diptych that billows vertically and horizontally on either monitor.
