Catalogue Essay
• The Otsuka Lotec No. 7.5 is a striking example of Japanese independent watchmaking, crafted by Jiro Katayama, a former car designer turned self-taught artisan. Inspired by vintage 8mm turret cameras, the watch features a steampunk-industrial aesthetic with a unique three-lens dial layout. These apertures display the jumping hour, rotating minutes, and running seconds, each framed by custom fisheye lenses that give the watch its signature look.
• The updated 2023 version of the No. 7.5 features a stainless steel case, sapphire crystals front and back, and a Miyota 82S5 automatic movement with a custom-developed jumping hour module. The module was created in collaboration with Precision Watch Tokyo, a company owned by Hajime Asaoka, further elevating the watch’s technical pedigree. Despite its unconventional display, the watch remains legible when viewed head-on and offers a satisfying mechanical click with each hour jump.
• Production is extremely limited to only 200 pieces per year and the watch is sold exclusively within Japan, requiring a local address and Japanese-issued credit card. Coming with full set of accessories and in “brand new” condition, the present example is a rare and coveted piece among collectors. Its artisanal charm, hands-on craftsmanship, and camera-inspired design make it a standout in the world of independent horology.
