Patek Philippe’s production of 1960s solar clocks was a representation of the times both from a technical and a design perspective. These clocks were not only futuristic with a mechanical pocket watch movement driven by solar power, but their cool sleek designs represented mid-century modernism. The gilt brass and Brazilian wood panelling were contemporary and hip for the period, and the construction of the case with four strong supporting pillars mimicked the architectural design of Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. Patek Philippe opened their Electronic Division in 1948 to research and create photoelectric and electronic timekeeping technology. The output by the brand exceeded that of many others and today their unique clocks are some of the most sought after timepieces on the market.

The present desk clock is a wonderful example of mid-century modernism. The dial is enhanced by the engraved and blacked “Horse Racing” scene that is highlighted by the addition of the lapis lazuli hour markers. The three dimensionality of the horses give the viewer a sense that they are charging for them. In well-preserved condition, this clock will delight collectors of all periods because of its ingenuity and form.
