Catalogue Essay
Patek Philippe released the Aquanaut wristwatch in 1997 at Basel and similar to the earlier Nautilus model, it is a sporty wristwatch with cool casual feel. The first reference 5060 measured 36mm in diameter and made in a limited number of 1000 examples. It retained Gerald Genta design elements of the Nautilus like the rounded octagonal bezel and brushed surface with polished bevel edges, however the Aquanaut was marketed to a younger consumer and appeared more casual with the addition of the then revolutionary rubber composite tropical strap.

Patek Philippe next released the reference 5065 a 37mm “Jumbo” diameter wristwatch with the automatic caliber 315 and screw down sapphire crystal back. In production from 1998 until 2006 the watch was retailed with both a stainless steel bracelet and the rubber tropical strap. The Aquanaut became a sought after timepiece and over the ensuing years the brand upgraded the watch with a chronograph (5968A) and a time traveler model (5164A).

The present example is now 20 years old and remains in excellent condition and is accompanied by its original accessories including the original invoice from Shreve & Co. The Aquanaut is well on its way to becoming a classic 21st century watch that can be enjoyed by both young and older collectors. Its stainless steel case with clean lines and tropical pattern dial are sure to attract collectors seeking a casual vibe. The present example is appearing at auction for the first time.
