Catalogue Essay
In the 1960’s, Patek Philippe released a series of waterproof wristwatches bearing the automatic calibre 27-460, one of the best self-winding calibres at the time. The reference 3425 was in production for only a decade until 1970, and it was available in yellow gold, pink gold, white gold or platinum.
Stamped with case maker no. 1 on the case back, the two-piece yellow gold case of the present example was made by the prestigious manufacture of Wenger. The beautifully crafted case is signified by its slender concave bezel, thin downward-sloping lugs, screw down case back, and a “double p” crown. The supremely elegant silhouette of the case is complemented by a breathtaking dial featuring a silvered opaline finish. The enamel on the dial remains thick and raised, with a strong accent above the “e” on "Genève" of the Patek Philippe signature.
The present specimen is an exceptionally preserved example double signed by the Zürich retailer Beyer, the oldest watch retailer in the world. To the best of our knowledge, only 6 examples of Beyer signed reference 3425 have appeared publicly on the market to date, and this is the 7th example to grace the market. In additional to the double signature, this example does not feature any seconds hand which is an extremely rare variation of the reference 3425.
