Catalogue Essay
• The Patek Philippe Ellipse takes its distinctive oval form from the golden section, a mathematical ratio admired since ancient Greece for its aesthetic harmony in art and architecture. First introduced in 1967, the Ellipse marked a bold departure from traditional watch design. It eliminated extended lugs, allowing the strap to flow seamlessly into the case, creating a smooth and elegant silhouette. This period was one of innovation for Patek Philippe, as the brand explored new case shapes and ventured into the realm of luxury sports watches. The iconic Nautilus was also introduced during this transformative era.
• Ref. 3634 is a particularly refined example within the Ellipse collection, which less than 20 examples are known in the market so far. It features a triple-stepped case crafted in either 18K white or yellow gold and is often paired with hard stone dials such as lapis lazuli or onyx, as seen in the present example. These dials are admired for their natural beauty and unique patterns, though their fragility makes them difficult to produce, resulting in limited availability. On the caseback of this watch, two horizontally stamped owl hallmarks indicate that it was made of gold and imported into France from a non-treaty country.
• Housed within the 18K yellow gold case is the calibre 28-255, an ultra-thin automatic movement renowned for its precision and elegance. This same movement was later used in the iconic reference 3700/1A Nautilus, establishing a direct link between the two models. This connection enhances the appeal of ref. 3634, offering collectors a more understated and refined alternative to one of Patek Philippe’s most celebrated timepieces. Offered in excellent condition, this timepiece is fresh-to-the-market.
