Catalogue Essay
The Patek Philippe Celestial is a captivating blend of technical excellence, exceptional craftsmanship, and poetic beauty. Introduced in 2002, the reference 5102 was initially produced exclusively in white gold, with an estimated 500 pieces made before yellow gold examples were launched in 2007, followed by pink gold and platinum variants in 2009. The reference 5102 was ultimately discontinued in 2012, paving the way for its successor, the reference 6102.
The dial features a Northern Hemisphere sky chart, elegantly rotating to illustrate the apparent angular motion of the stars and moon, alongside the progression of the moon phases. Three sapphire crystal discs are seamlessly layered to simulate the dynamic orbit of the moon and the passage of stars, creating a remarkable sense of depth.
Hours and minutes are indicated by two skeletonized white-lacquered gold feuille hands, complemented by a subtle blue outer chapter ring with Roman numerals. The delicate elliptical contour on the inside of the glass frames the portion of the sky visible from all cities at the latitude of Geneva.
Preserved in new-old-stock condition and accompanied by all original accessories, this timepiece is arguably one of the most intriguing modern Patek Philippe wristwatches ever made, sure to enchant collectors of spectacular masterpieces.
