Good to know:

- Rare model made within a short production run
- Officer-style case with a hinged caseback that resembles early 19th century timepieces
- Self-winding perpetual calendar with retrograde date

Released in 1998, the ref. 5059 was the successor to the Patek Philippe ref. 5050, spanning 8 years until the end of production in 2006. Throughout the production run, it was estimated around 1200 to 1400 pieces were made. With such rarity and the limited production run, the reference has become a highly desired piece in the perpetual calendar category.

Housing the same movement as its predecessor the ref. 5050, the cal. 315 S-QR is a revolutionary movement made by Patek Philippe. Before the cal. 315 S-QR, perpetual calendar watches by the manufacturer were only equipped with either a manual winding movement with sweep center seconds or a self-winding movement. It was not until the advent of the cal. 315 S-QR that a movement with both sweeping centre seconds and self-winding module, and on top of that with an additional retrograde date module, thus, getting the “QR” labelling that stands for Quantième Perpétuel à Retour date.

The present ref. 5059J is fitted with a dial painted with radial Roman numerals and sectorial minute track that is reminiscent of early 20th century timepieces. Instead of the Calatrava style case in the ref. 5050, the ref. 5059J features a prominent officer-style case noticeable by the lugs with screws and a hinged caseback, in which such features can still be seen in modern day pieces that hold important significance. For watch connoisseurs that appreciate classy-looking watches with complex grand complications, this present ref. 5059J is a masterpiece that carries the Patek Philippe heritage combined with technical sophistication.
