- A mix of Arabic numeral and square markers

Entering the millennium, Patek Philippe released the ref. 5055 in the late 90s, bearing one of the most sophisticated designs amongst other watches made by the firm. At first glance the watch already stands out with the 36mm solid white gold monobloc case, integrating the lugs and the bezel. The seamless look of the case matches the design of the dial, which consists of a white surface dial with sub-dials scattered in an unusual layout unlike more conventional designs of Patek Philippe watches. Arabic numerals can be seen on the upper half of the dial, while the lower half is decorated with square hour markers. The small seconds, power reserve, date and moonphase sub-dials are in diagonal positions instead of 3, 6, 9 o’clock positions. Together with the monobloc case, the present ref. 5055 is Patek Philippe daring attempt to present a watch as a contemporary icon.

This Patek Philippe ref. 5055G uses the in-house cal. 240/164 movement, or also referred as the cal. 240 PS IRM C LU. It is a robust and trustworthy movement, which can also be found in the Nautilus ref. 5712. The 22K self-winding rotor is stamped with the signature Patek Philippe Calatrava Cross. For a watch with such a limited production run, this contemporary-looking timepiece would be a nice possession for watch enthusiasts that enjoy something outside the traditional box.

Patek Philippe

Swiss | 1839

Since its founding in 1839, this famous Geneva-based firm has been surprising its clientele with superbly crafted timepieces fitted with watchmaking's most prestigious complications. Traditional and conservative designs are found across Patek Philippe's watches made throughout their history — the utmost in understated elegance.

Well-known for the Graves Supercomplication — a highly complicated pocket watch that was the world’s most complicated watch for 50 years — this family-owned brand has earned a reputation of excellence around the world. Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
