Catalogue Essay
Established in 2004 in New York, Reena Spaulings is an artistic collective which has assumed the name of an artist’s persona and gallery. Various artists have adopted the Reena Spaulings pseudonym and produced work to promote notions of collectivity, anonymity and collaboration, thereby dismantling the concept of the artist’s hand being associated with solely one person. The collective has held solo exhibitions in six countries and their work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

Included in Reena Spaulings' first exhibition in London, the present works belong to a series of charcoal drawings based on photographs of art openings, performance events and installation views at Reena Spaulings Fine Art between 2004 and 2006. The group has utilised the mounting and framing process in the present works to alter and re-imagine the works, intentionally cropping the composition and hiding parts of the drawing behind the black mount.
