Catalogue Essay
The Rolex King Midas is a celebrated star-studded model from the late 1960s, starting with the first reference 9630, the model is renowned to be the watch choice of “The King of Rock n’ Roll”, Elvis Presley and “The Duke”, John Wayne. The daringly different design is also conceived by the esteemed icon behind the famed Patek Philippe Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the one and only Gerald Genta. The architecture of the timepiece drew inspiration from the Greek mythology of the King whom has the ability to turn everything into gold by his touch, hence the “Midas touch”. Living up to its moniker, the lavish model is fitted with a ribbed bracelet crafted out of a single gold ingot. Impossible to forget its wrist presence, the watch weighs over a hefty north of 150 grams.

The present specimen ref. 3584 from circa 1975 in white gold is adorned with an exotic lapis dial and retailed by Asprey. Even more breath-taking, the dial bears the highly sought-after prestige silvered “Khanjar” emblem positioned at 6 o’clock. Fresh to the market and appearing as the second example of this configuration in auction, the present lot fashions in incredible style and certainly is the perfect fit for the forthright collector of showstopper timepieces. Furthermore, it is accompanied with the original Greek urn presentation case, a rare sight to see for sure in its complete set.

Rolex

Swiss | 1905
Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933. They would form the foundation for Rolex's Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956, but also importantly for their sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.One of its most famous models is the Cosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, these chronographs are without any doubt amongst the most iconic and coveted of all collectible wristwatches. Other key collectible models include their most complicated vintage watches, including references 8171 and 6062 with triple calendar and moon phase, "Jean Claude Killy" triple date chronograph models and the Submariner, including early "big-crown" models and military-issued variants.
