A revolutionary change in the Daytona lineup occurred in 2000 when Rolex updated the automatic Cosmograph Daytona, introducing the reference 116520 with the brand’s first, fully in-house chronograph movement, the caliber 4130. It replaced the iconic reference 16520 with modified Zenith caliber 4030 and resulted in unprecedented demand. Its ease of use, accuracy, and a larger, sportier design added to the Daytona’s desirability. Since 2000, Rolex has evolved the reference with the 116500LN in stainless steel and ceramic bezel released in 2016, the stunning reference 116506 in platinum with ice-blue dial for the Daytona’s 50th anniversary in 2013, and in 2023 for the 60th anniversary the reference 126506 platinum model for a new generation.

The reference 126506 features an upgraded movement, caliber 4131, with Chronergy escapement with a redesigned escape wheel and anchor to optimize efficiency and provide better overall timekeeping. The ice-blue dial features baguette diamond hour markers, with sub-dials incorporating chestnut brown outer rings matching the ceramic bezel. Perhaps the most significant and visual change is the sapphire display back rarely seen on Rolex timepieces.

The present model, from 2024, is offered by the original owner and fresh-to-the-market. The first example of the reference 126506 to appear at public auction at the time of cataloguing, it is in near new condition and complete with its full suite of accessories. The Rolex Daytona remains one of the most sought after timepieces in the market today, and this latest version in platinum with diamond-set dial is the epitome of a luxury sports watch.

Rolex

Swiss | 1905

Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933. They would form the foundation for Rolex's Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956, but also importantly for their sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.

One of its most famous models is the Cosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, these chronographs are without any doubt amongst the most iconic and coveted of all collectible wristwatches. Other key collectible models include their most complicated vintage watches, including references 8171 and 6062 with triple calendar and moon phase, "Jean Claude Killy" triple date chronograph models and the Submariner, including early "big-crown" models and military-issued variants.
