Swinging high above the skyline, free climber and artist Ryota Kikuchi is pictured here in a spellbinding self-portrait over Uwajima on Japan’s Shikoku island. Known for his gravity-defying performances, Kikuchi takes this exploit to the next level. While participating in the 2013 Art Uwajima, he attached a rope and piece of wood, creating a temporary swing, underneath a large bridge. While swinging over the sea, he unleashed his harness to fully enjoy the sensation of flying through the air. With striking lines of the horizon below, Kikuchi appears to effortlessly swing in mid-air, transforming how we view and experience the landscape. After receiving his MA in Intermedia Art from Tokyo University of the Arts, he began to use his unique skill set as a free climber to explore previously hidden viewpoints within the landscape. Kikuchi comments, ‘I choose to quietly take part in a performance, which I document as a photograph. It is a personal adventure.’ He continues, ‘I hope my work gives people a fresh viewpoint of ordinary cityscapes and landscapes.’
