Catalogue Essay
For upwards of forty years, Sophie Calle has used photography to explore complex notions of memory, loss and intimacy. The present lot, a diptych from her series, Last Seen…, addresses Rembrandt’s 1633 masterwork, The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, one of thirteen paintings stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990. By juxtaposing the painting’s empty frame alongside recollections of the work by museum staff, Calle recontextualizes the theft – a loss not merely confined to its historical and academic significance, but one grounded in the emotional impact on those who continue to feel its absence.
