Catalogue Essay
In 1983, Rolf Schnyder acquired the esteemed Ulysse Nardin manufacture, transforming the storied brand into a leading innovator alongside the brilliant watchmaker, philosopher and poet Ludwig Oechslin. Together, they crafted exceptional wristwatches featuring ingenious complications once thought exclusive to pocket watches and clocks, captivating the watch world with their whimsical creations. The present Jungle Jaquemarts embodies this inventive spirit with its enchanting charm.

Ulysse Nardin was one of the first manufacturers to embrace the revival of the minute repeater. To enhance the complexity of this function, the brand incorporated automaton figures known as “Jaquemarts” onto the dial, making it the only manufacture in the world to utilize “Jaquemarts” in its minute repeaters.

Building on this concept, Ulysse Nardin pushed the boundaries of creativity by integrating animal “Jaquemarts” into a vividly colored jungle landscape depicted on two superposed cloisonné enamel dials. Housed within a 39mm platinum case, the two-tier dials create a three-dimensional illusion of the jungle’s flora and fauna. Activating the minute repeater slider brings the jungle to life: the tiger's paw and the toucan move forward while a small fish jumps off the rocks into the water, marking the running seconds. Each exquisitely detailed figure performs in synchronized choreography with the enchanting chime sequence of the minute repeater, indicating the hours, quarters, and minutes on command.

Powered by Ulysse Nardin's manually wound caliber UN-72, this remarkable piece is one of only 18 limited editions produced in platinum, dazzling as number 1 and remaining unworn throughout the years. Extremely rare to find, this Jungle Jaquemarts is a masterful automata timepiece that exemplifies Ulysse Nardin's creativity and whimsical ingenuity. The intricate cloisonné work is of exceptional beauty and quality, sure to captivate connoisseurs with its high level of complications and the exquisite craftsmanship required for the creation of the dial.
