Catalogue Essay
Vacheron Constantin’s reference 4178 is most likely the firm’s best known chronograph design. Introduced in the early 1940s it was available in stainless steel, yellow gold, pink gold and stainless steel and gold. The present example, cased in rose gold and from 1942, is one of the most beautiful and best preserved specimens of this model to appear on the market in years. All components are in virtually mint condition and appear to feature the correct factory finish. The movement seems to have seen only one service since new and is in excellent condition. The case, in our view never polished, displays the full beauty this reference has when preserved in its factory finish. The dial is a work of art and captures the attention thanks to its contrasted two-tone colour theme in shiny and matte shades of champagne. The large Arabic numerals enhance the looks and harmonise very well with the rose gold and blue steel hands.
