Good To Know:

- Chronograph
- The only known example of a reference 4639
- Original 18k yellow gold bracelet

Few manufactures have approached the chronograph with the same quiet assurance as Vacheron Constantin. Among its vintage production, one finds a remarkable freedom of expression, with cases and dials conceived with audacity yet always composed.

The present reference 4639 stands apart even within this distinguished lineage thanks to the arresting interplay of sculptural lugs and bracelet design.

Originally derived from a ref. 4072 case design, the final execution was so unique that Vacheron Constantin assigned it a new reference number: 4639—a reference and piece that, to the best of our knowledge and research, represents a unique creation. According to Vacheron Constantin archives, the case and dial were produced in 1948, and the bracelet added in 1950 while the movement within was swapped with one from 1954, sourced from a ref. 4072. This swap is not documented in the brand’s archives, and it is most probable that the original movement required servicing or had been damaged, prompting the watchmaker to replace it with a newer movement.

We are delighted to offer the present chronograph making its auction debut, accompanied by the very first color photographs; until 2026, only a black-and-white image from the Vacheron Constantin archives was available.

While the case and bracelet speak with bold clarity, the dial offers a measured counterpoint. It dispenses with superfluous ornamentation, yet stands out through its oversized “Big Eyes” chronograph registers, lending the watch both balance and quiet authority.

Vacheron Constantin

Swiss | 1755

The world's oldest watch brand in continuous operation since its founding in 1755, Vacheron Constantin was the first watch company to manufacture movements with interchangeable parts beginning in 1839. Vacheron's watches are admired for their Latin-influenced case designs, well-balanced proportions and exquisitely finished movements of the highest quality. The Geneva-based manufacturer is known for their highly complicated masterpieces, including the King Farouk Grand Complication made in 1935, the Tour de l'Ile that was the most complicated serially produced wristwatch when introduced in 2005 and the 57260 — the world’s most complicated watch — made in 2015.

Key vintage models include minute repeating wristwatches such as the references 4261, chronographs such as the references 4178 and 6087 and the oversized Cioccolotone models such as ref. 4737. Collectors also appreciate Vacheron's Chronometer Royal pocket and wristwatches, as well as the '222,' the brand's first luxury sports watch produced from 1977 through 1984.
