The modesty of Christenberry’s small-scale Brownie prints, with their soft resolution and rich color, perfectly complements these unpretentious buildings. Most were photographed head-on in that frank, direct way Christenberry shares with both Evans and snapshooters. He is interested in these buildings as social constructions, and in the space around them because architecture becomes an integral part of the landscape. In his work, the relationship between the natural and the man-made world seems in perfect harmony, and the age and decay of most of these structures further softens the distinction between what has been made by man or by God.
