Catalogue Essay
Zhoujie Zhang works at the cusp of contemporary design, creating some of the most innovative and forward-thinking designs of the early 21st century. Similar to designers such as Joris Laarman who are working with algorithmic functions to execute their designs, Zhang used computer software to turn a two-dimensional plane into a three-dimensional fractal object made from various sizes and arrangements of triangles. Though the design originates from the computer, the chair is still constructed by hand, revealing Zhang’s interest in the handmade as well as the computer-made.
