Good To Know:
- First generation of the IWC Ingenieur SL
- Antimagnetic 8541 caliber
- Confirmed by the Extract from the Archives
Nicknamed the “Jumbo” for its muscular 40mm diameter, the IWC Ingenieur SL (Steel Line / Sports Line) was in production from 1976 until 1984 with a remarkably limited output of approximately 543 pieces produced across stainless steel and two-tone combinations. Its distinctive dial boasts a captivating chequered waffle pattern that dances with light in a display of subtle, understated elegance—never flashy, always refined.
At its heart lies the Pellaton self-winding calibre 8541ES, shielded by a soft iron Faraday cage that delivers exceptional antimagnetic protection up to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss)—a technical feat IWC pioneered back in 1955. This robust movement also incorporates a hacking seconds function for precise time-setting and a practical date complication.
The present example is preserved in excellent overall condition, showcasing the sought-after first-generation bracelet with its distinctive center links featuring rounded corners—a detail later revised to wider, squared-off aesthetics for subsequent iterations.
Adding contemporary allure, Brad Pitt wore the Ingenieur SL ref. 1832—customized with a striking green dial recently in his starring role as the veteran racer Sonny Hayes in the film F1. While the on-screen spotlight has reignited interest in this under appreciated Genta masterpiece, this is the chance to own the origin of where the model started.
