- Founded in 2016, Kurono Tokyo is designer turned self-taught independent watchmaker Hajime Asaoka’s answer to the high demand of his timepieces with a more attainable and affordable way. As one of the most celebrated Japanese independent watchmakers in the present day, different from his usual tourbillons and complicated watches that are accessible to only limited collectors, Kurono Tokyo is aimed for a broader audience.
- Kurono Tokyo highlights the play on dial artistry, perhaps because of Asaoka’s designer roots, and this Calendrier Type 1 does not make an exception. The khaki dial of the watch has a curvature from the centre to the edge, and two dial layers are pressed to form a 3D effect, together with the raised numeral hours, this watch has a straight forward appearance yet only uncovers its design details when you observe it meticulously.
- The leaf hands indicating the hours and minutes are done in the typical Kurono way, by high polishing and fine touches by hand, they give a mesmerizing look when paired with the dial.
