Made to commemorate the famed Italian scientist Galileo Galilei known as the godfather of modern science. Galileo was known not only for his findings and groundbreaking achievements in the field of physics, astronomy, mathematics and engineering but also for his efforts in solving time-measurement problems, introducing a system to calculate the longitude at sea using Jupiter’s moons as a celestial clock. To commemorate the feat, Panerai launched the “Lo Scienzato” collection in 2010 via Radiomir and Luminor models. The first limited edition example to feature the newly developed in-house cal. P.2005/S was the Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramica featuring a black ceramic case. Produced as a limited edition of 150 pieces, the present example is numbered 77.

The semi-skeletonized dial is striking at first glance featuring a triple barrel capable of power reserve up to 6 days, with a rotating tourbillon carriage on the 10 and 11 O’clock position. Furthermore, an additional hand is featured for the dual time with a day and night indicator positioned at 3 O’clock and small seconds at 9 O’clock. The power reserve indicator is positioned on the back of the movement.

Presented in excellent overall condition and accompanied by the full set of accessories, this present example is attractive and a desirable Panerai masterpiece to acquire.

Panerai

Italian | 1860
Known for its robust designs and large case sizes, Officine Panerai was established in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai in Florence, Italy. Around 1900, Giovanni's grandson Guido Panerai took over, and Panerai became the supplier to the Regia Marina — the Royal Italian Navy. After supplying the navy with high-precision instruments for a number of years, Officine Panerai created Radiomir, a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices. By 1936, the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai again with the request to design a watch resistant to extreme underwater conditions. The watch they created became known as the "Radiomir".
Panerai's watches made during the early twentieth century era were comprised of cases designed and manufactured by Rolex SA, with Cortébert, a Swiss manufacturer, supplying the majority of their movements. The most recognizable designs from the firm are the Radiomir and Luminor. To date, vintage models from the first half of the 1900s, such as the reference 3646 and 6152 models, remain the most desirable among collectors.
