Following the Arktos (2002-2004), North Pole Winter (2006), Pangea (2008-2012), and Pole2Pole expeditions (2016-2019), Panerai once again collaborates with Mike Horn, a South African-born Swiss explorer and adventurer, in 2020 - a special edition Submersible Tourbillon GMT, limited to just 5 pieces.
The Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT PAM01108 features a skeletonized movement with a second time zone and a tourbillon. Remarkably, the watch is housed in a massive 50mm case made from a unique type of steel known as EcoPangaea steel, which is recycled from the discarded drive shaft of Pangaea, the 35m sailboat owned by Mike Horn. This vessel has accompanied him on numerous expeditions around the globe, from Antarctica to the Amazon, which is also reflected on the caseback of the watch.
The PAM01108 is powered by the P.2005/T movement, which Panerai has utilized in several other skeletonized tourbillon watches, but is constructed from titanium in this reference. This hand-wound movement boasts a six-day power reserve and features a novel tourbillon positioned at 10 o’clock. Unlike conventional tourbillons that rotate on the same plane as the dial, the Panerai tourbillon rotates perpendicularly, completing one revolution every 30 seconds.
Preserved in like-new, unworn condition, the strap is also autographed by Mike Horn, making this a truly special collectible within the explorer community.

Panerai
Italian | 1860Known for its robust designs and large case sizes, Officine Panerai was established in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai in Florence, Italy. Around 1900, Giovanni's grandson Guido Panerai took over, and Panerai became the supplier to the Regia Marina — the Royal Italian Navy. After supplying the navy with high-precision instruments for a number of years, Officine Panerai created Radiomir, a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices. By 1936, the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai again with the request to design a watch resistant to extreme underwater conditions. The watch they created became known as the "Radiomir".
Panerai's watches made during the early twentieth century era were comprised of cases designed and manufactured by Rolex SA, with Cortébert, a Swiss manufacturer, supplying the majority of their movements. The most recognizable designs from the firm are the Radiomir and Luminor. To date, vintage models from the first half of the 1900s, such as the reference 3646 and 6152 models, remain the most desirable among collectors.
