The Production of the ref. 3970 is divided into four series. The present example belongs to the third series, distinguished by its sapphire display back supplied with an additional screw‑down solid caseback. Crafted in yellow, pink, and white gold as well as platinum, the white gold variant is already the scarcest among the four metals. Rarity here is further heightened by the presence of a black dial—a configuration seldom seen.
Most white‑gold ref. 3970 were delivered with silvered “argenté” dials, and the few black‑dial examples were typically fitted with diamond‑set hour markers. By contrast, the present watch is adorned with faceted baton indexes, a detail that not only renders it exceptionally rare but also lends it a distinctly sportier, more masculine character compared to its jewel‑set counterparts.
“Fresh-to-the-market” and with the coveted baton black dial confirmed on the Certificate of Origin, this configuration is less than 15 examples known to the market. The subtle warmth of the white‑gold case paired with the sleek, inky black dial creates an aesthetic of striking sophistication. Its appeal is further enhanced by the watch’s well‑preserved condition and its complete set of accessories. The present ref. 3970 stands as an outstanding opportunity for the discerning collector seeking one of the most desirable iterations of this landmark reference.

Swiss | 1839Since its founding in 1839, this famous Geneva-based firm has been surprising its clientele with superbly crafted timepieces fitted with watchmaking's most prestigious complications. Traditional and conservative designs are found across Patek Philippe's watches made throughout their history — the utmost in understated elegance.Well-known for the Graves Supercomplication — a highly complicated pocket watch that was the world’s most complicated watch for 50 years — this family-owned brand has earned a reputation of excellence around the world. Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
